A lyric in the long-running off-Broadway musical Altar Boyz is being altered to reflect current technology: In the song “The Calling,” a reference to Jesus “beeping” the character of Mark has been changed to one in which JC utilizes Twitter. In the Gary Adler tune that includes the lyric “Jesus called me on my cell phone,” the new lyric is, “I felt a vibrating feeling on the belt loop of my pants. Jesus tweeted on my twitter, a message texted from above.” Altar Boys continues its run at New World Stages, directed by Stafford Arima.
A musical spoof about a heavenly boy band trying to save the world one screaming fan at a time, Altar Boyz opened off-Broadway on March 1, 2005. The show features music and lyrics by Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker and a book by Kevin Del Aguila, based on a concept by Marc Kessler and Ken Davenport. The show is choreographed by Christopher Gattelli.
Altar Boyz currently features Michael Kadin Craig (Matthew), Lee Markham (Mark), Travis Nesbitt (Luke), Mauricio Perez (Juan) and Ravi Roth (Abraham).
